IN PRAIANO, A UNIQUE EVENT FROM AUGUST 1 TO 4

San Domenico Illuminations

The San Domenico Illuminations in Praiano are one of the most enchanting and eagerly awaited events of the summer on the Amalfi Coast, a must-see celebration for anyone who wishes to experience authentic traditions, spirituality, and breathtaking scenery.

Between the end of July and the beginning of August, the village of Praiano turns into an open-air stage: alleys, streets, and small squares are illuminated by thousands of candles, lanterns, and small lights in honor of the celebration of San Domenico.

The celebration is closely connected to the historic Church of Santa Maria a Castro, located on the slopes of Mount Sant’Angelo a Tre Pizzi, about 364 meters above sea level, from where visitors can enjoy an extraordinary panoramic view over the coast.

In the days leading up to August 4th, the official day of the celebration, the beautiful Church of San Gennaro, overlooking Piazza San Gennaro in the area of Vettica Maggiore, becomes the beating heart of the event. Here, more than 2,000 candles are arranged along the perimeter of the elegant majolica-tiled floor, creating a mesmerizing play of light that highlights the colors and decorative patterns typical of the Campanian tradition.

The stars of the evening are the young people of the village, known as the “Luminaria boys”, who light the candles one by one using torches, creating a truly emotional and captivating spectacle. As the candles are lit, the atmosphere gradually becomes magical: soft background music, the sound of church bells, and the breathtaking view over the gulf make the San Domenico Illuminations in Praiano a truly unique event on the Amalfi Coast, perfect for those looking for unforgettable experiences during the summer.

Taking part in the Luminaria means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic traditions of the Amalfi Coast, an experience that beautifully combines faith, culture, and natural beauty in a truly extraordinary setting.

FUN FACT

As its strong visual and symbolic impact suggests, fire and light are the true protagonists of the Luminaria. These elements are rooted in an ancient and fascinating legend connected to Saint Dominic.

According to tradition, Joan, the mother of Dominic, dreamed while she was pregnant with the future saint that she was carrying a dog in her womb. Once born, the dog ran away holding a lit torch in its mouth. In this symbolic story, the dog represents loyalty and devotion, while the torch symbolizes the burning zeal of charity and faith.

This spiritual flame foretells the mission of Saint Dominic: to “set the world on fire” with the light of the Word of God, spreading values of truth, love, and dedication. From this powerful symbolism comes the deeper meaning of the Luminaria, where the light of the candles becomes a metaphor for faith, tradition, and spirituality, transforming the event into an intense and meaningful experience.

The Church of San Gennaro in the area of Vettica Maggiore in Praiano is easy to reach and clearly visible from the coastal road SS163 thanks to its majestic dome and its majolica-tiled bell tower.
If you arrive at Piazza San Gennaro before sunset, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful and romantic sunsets on the Amalfi Coast.
